Deadly Drug Rehab in Ciudad Juarez

Rival factions of Mexican’s warring drug cartel are suspected in the latest round of drug-related violence – this time at a drug rehab facility in Mexico.

The Mexican drug cartel is notorious on both sides of the U.S. border, earning a well-deserved reputation for ruthlessness, but a recent killing at a drug rehab facility shows that even rehab isn’t a safe place to hide for those involved in drug trafficking. Gunmen shot and killed 17 patients and wounded two others last week, according to a report by CNN.

The attack happened in a rehab center in the northern Mexico town of Ciudad Juarez and was confirmed by the local mayor, Jose Reyes Ferriz. Authorities believe a rival drug gang was responsible for the attack. Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas, isn’t a stranger to violence. The town is known for it’s high murder rate, with as many as 1,600 people killed there in 2008.

The Mexican government’s nearly three-year war on the drug cartels has led to unprecedented violence south of the U.S. border. While the violence is taking place in Mexico and not the U.S., there are ties to America. In fact, it’s thought that the underlying battle being waged is for the rights to the lucrative U.S. market.
