Pete Sampras Voted into International Tennis Hall of Fame

Pete Sampras will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on July 14. Sampras won a men’s record 14 Grand Slam singles titles while dominating men’s tennis throughout the 1990s. Sampras hold’s the record for most weeks ranked as the world’s number one player at 286. Sampras enjoyed the number one ranking for 102 straight weeks during a stretch in 1996-98.

Sampras compiled a 762-222 record in his 15-yaer career. He won 64 singles titles during that time, including seven singles titles at Wimbledon. He was named the ATP Player of the Year a record six consecutive years from 1993-98 and amassed over $43 million in winnings.

Joining Sampras on induction day will be Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario who, in 1994, became the first Spanish woman to ever win the U.S. Open singles title. Sanchez-Vicario finished her 18-year career with a mark of 759-295. Her versatile approach made it easy for her to move from singles to doubles where she thrived. In February 1995 she held the women’s number one ranking in both singles and doubles. She won the French Open titles three times.

Sven Davidson received the Hall call as well. In 1957 he won the French Championship, an event that would later be renamed the French Open. In 1958 he won the doubles title at Wimbledon. Davidson hold the Swedish record for doubles match wins at the Davis Cup.

Russ Adams was inducted for his contribution to the game of tennis. As a photographer covering the sport for more than 50-years Adams has chronicled some of the most memorable events through his lens.
