Jon Bon Jovi spoke out about his teenage daughter’s shocking heroin overdose for the first time in an interview with Fox 11 this week. The rocker said his entire family is thankful for the outpouring of support for 19-year-old Stephanie, who was rushed to a New York hospital on November 14 after overdosing in her dorm room at Hamilton College in Kirkland.
"This tragedy was something that I had to face too, so we'll get through it," Bon Jovi told Fox 11. "And people's incredible warm wishes for my family and I have been really reassuring. So, we're good."
The incident resulted in Stephanie’s arrest for misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. Ian Grant, the 21-year-old student who called 911, was also charges with drug possession. All of the charges against the pair were later dropped due to a 2011 penal code amendment that protects people from being charged with drug possession if they sought help from authorities for a "drug or alcohol overdose or other life-threatening medical emergency.”
"By law, they have immunity. I can’t prosecute them even if I wanted to,” Oneida County District Attorney Scott D. McNamara said last week. "To proceed would be highly inappropriate and highly unethical, and would jeopardize my opportunity to practice in the future."
Stephanie Rose Bongiovi is Bon Jovi’s first child with his wife of 23 years, Dorothy Hurley. The couple is also parents to sons Jesse, 17, Jacob, 10, and Romeo, 8.
Family insider say the Bongiovi family is still in shock about the overdose. "No one had any idea she did those kinds of drugs . . . Steph has a wild side, but she's not a crazy partier,” a source told Us Weekly.
