Venezuela to Recognize Breakaway Georgia Regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia

Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez has announced his country will recognize the independence of breakaway Georgia regions South Ossetia and Abkhazia, joining Russia and Nicaragua as the only countries to take such a step.

Chavez was in Russia when he made the announcement; a move many in the West feel was done to strengthen Venezuela’s relationship with Moscow. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev thanked Chavez for his support of the two regions and stated, “We think that it is a sovereign affair of states whether to recognize their independence.”

Russia engaged in a brief war with Georgia over the breakaway regions last year after Georgia attempted to regain control in South Ossetia. Moscow then sent troops to South Ossetia as well as Abkhazia and quickly recognized their independence from the former Soviet state.

Chavez has been visiting Russia with plans to sign a new energy and weapons deal and Medvedev confirmed that Moscow would be willing to sign an arms agreement with Venezuela, an agreement that could include the sale of submarines, armored vehicles, helicopters and missiles.
