NHL Scores from Jan. 18; Marc Savard, Cristobal Huet, Brad Richards, and Chris Mason lead their teams to wins

Phil Kessel scored the game-winner in the shootout to lift the Boston Bruins (22-19-4) past the Pittsburgh Penguins (20-17-8) 5-4. Marc Savard had a goal and two assists while Glen Murray added a goal and an assist in the win. The Penguins took a 2-0 lead in the first period and led 4-3 after the second frame but couldn’t hold on for the win. Evgeni Malkin had a pair of goals in the loss.

The Washington Capitals (20-20-7) built a 2-0 lead after two periods and scored three times in the third to skate past the Carolina Hurricanes (25-19-5) 5-2. Alexander Semin scored two goals for the Capitals and Alexander Ovechkin added an empty netter in the win.

Two goals in the third period lifted the New York Islanders (22-21-4) to a 4-2 victory over the struggling Philadelphia Flyers (11-31-4). Mike Sillinger gave the Islanders a 3-2 lead in the third with a power play goal and Andy Hilbert sealed the win with a goal a minute later. Miroslav Satan had two assists in the win as the Flyers were sent to their seventh straight loss.

Cristobal Huet stopped 44 shots to give the Montreal Canadiens (26-17-5) a 4-1 win over the Atlanta Thrashers (26-15-8). With the contest tied at 1-1 after the first period the Canadiens went on to score three goals in the second to earn the win. Sheldon Souray scored a goal and had an assist and Guillaume Latendresse added a pair of assists in the Montreal win.

Brad Richards scored a pair of goals in the second period and scored the game-winner in the shootout to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning (24-22-2) past the New Jersey Devils (28-14-4) 3-2. Jay Pandolfo put the Devils on the board in the first for a 1-0 lead before Richards’ two goals in the second. The Devils then goat a goal from Paul Martin in the third to sent the game into extra time.

Roberto Luongo stopped 34 shots and Taylor Pyatt had a goal and an assist as the Vancouver Canucks (27-19-1) beat the Ottawa Senators (27-20-2) 2-1. The Senators out-shot the Canucks 35-14 on the night but could manage to get the puck past Luongo just once.

The Toronto Maple Leafs (22-20-6) built a 3-0 lead after two periods and held on to beat the Florida Panthers (17-22-10) 3-2. Chad Kilger had a goal and an assist for the Leafs and Andrew Raycroft stopped 39 shots to secure the win. Florid out-shot Toronto 41-14 but only found the net on third period goals from Gregory Campbell and Ville Peltonen.

Chris Mason recorded his fifth shutout of the season in the Nashville Predators (33-12-3) 4-0 blanking of the Columbus Blue Jackets (17-25-5). Mason stopped all 33 shots he faced and Paul Kariya added a goal and an assist to lift the Predators. David Legwand mimicked the line of Kariya with a goal and an assist of his own.

Ryan Smyth scored a pair of goal sand added and assist while Dwayne Roloson stopped 23 shots to lift the Edmonton Oilers (23-20-4) past the struggling Anaheim Ducks (30-11-8) 4-1. Anaheim was up 1-0 after Teemu Selanne scored in the first but the Oiulers struck for two in the second and two in the third for the win. Shawn Horcoff had a pair of assists for the Oilers.

The San Jose Sharks (32-15-0) responded to a 1-0 deficit with three straight goals to take command and beta the Phoenix Coyotes (21-24-2) 5-2. Ryan Clowe scored and had two assists for the Sharks while Patrick Marleau had a goal and two assists as well. Joe Thornton got in on the action for the Sharks with a goal and an assist in the win.

Dallas Drake score two first period goals and Bill Guerin added a goal of his own to lift the St. Louis Blues (18-21-8) past the Los Angeles Kings (16-27-6) 3-1. Manny Legace stopped 34 shots for the Blues and David Backes had two assists in the win.
