Juan Martin Del Potro overcame a slow start in his 2009 U.S. Open quarterfinals match against Marin Cilic, dropping the first set but the Argentinean fought his way back and earned a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 victory to advance to the semifinals of this year’s final Grand Slam event.
Del Potro was clearly the more composed on Thursday as he limited his unforced errors to 24 while Cilic committed 53. Not only did Del Potro limit his mistakes, he took advantage of every opportunity presented as he broke Cilic’s serve on eight of his eight chances.
Del Potro has yet to win a Grand Slam singles title and his semifinals appearance at the U.S. Open equals his deepest run having reached the semis at the 2009 French Open before falling to Andy Murray. He reached the quarterfinals at this year’s Australian Open but has never been past the second round at Wimbledon.
