The embattled former Republican Rep. Bob Ney was sentenced today to 30 months in prison and fined $6,000 for his involvement in a lobbying scandal tied to Jack Abramoff. U.S. District Judge Ellen S. Huvelle handed down a sentence that went beyond the 27 months requested by the Justice Department.
Huvelle remarked, “Both your constituents and the public trusted you to represent them honestly.” A trust the Ohio rep. admittedly violated. Apologizing in the courtroom for his actions, Ney said “I will continue to take full responsibility, accept the consequences and battle the demons of addiction that are within me.”
In October Ney pled guilty to charges of trading official actions for Abramoff in exchange for vacations, sporting event tickets, campaign donations and more.
Ney has admitted to having an alcohol problem yet Huvelle would not allow that defense to merit his actions, “what baffles the court is what went wrong...an alcohol problem doesn't explain everything.”
That said, Ney will be serving his time at a federal facility in West Virginia that has an alcohol abuse program.
