NFL Scores: Pittsburgh Steelers Use OT Field Goal to Top Tennessee Titans in Season Opener

Ben Roethlisberger was 33/43 passing for 363 yards and a touchdown, Santonio Holmes had nine receptions for 131 yards and a TD and Jeff Reed had a pair of field goals including the game winner in overtime as the Pittsburgh Steelers knocked off the Tennessee Titans 13-10 in the NFL’s season opener.

After a scoreless opening quarter the Steelers finally put the first points of the game on the board late in the second as Roethlisberger hit Holmes on a 34-yard touchdown pass. That 7-0 lead was erased less than 30 seconds later though as Kerry Collins found Justin Gage on a 14-yard touchdown pass to even the score at 7-7 with 48 seconds left in the half.

The third quarter reflected the first as neither team could find the endzone as defense dominated the frame but in the fourth Rob Bironas put the Titans in front with a 45-yard field goal for a 10-7 advantage. Jeff Reed was able to tie the game with 2:57 left in the fourth when he connected from 32-yards but Tennessee had plenty of time to get within range for Bironas to attempt a game winner. That didn’t happen though and after Craig Hentrich shanked a punt it was the Steelers who had one more shot.

Roethlisberger was moving the Steelers down the field and it looked as if Reed would get a shot at ending the game in regulation but Hines Ward fumbled near the goal line after a 30-yard reception and the Titans recovered, eventually sending the game into overtime.

Fortunately for the Steelers they won the toss and Roethlisberger, who struggled with his accuracy in the first half, hit every pass he needed to and put Reed in position for the 33-yard game-winner.

While the Steelers came away with the win the Titans certainly had their chances and a missed field goal from Bironas and a second that was blocked will be looked at as costly mistakes that kept them from opening the season with a victory.
