A 34-year-old man was critically injured when hand-held mortar exploded while being tested on the set of “Charlie Wilson’s War.” The man, whose name was not released, suffered head and facial injuries as a result of the blast.
He was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood were he remained in critical condition following surgery. According to fire Captain Darren Moon there was no safety officer on the set at the time of the explosion.
A safety officer is required by the Fire Department any time pyrotechnics are being used. Moon said that the Fire Department had not been notified by the production company, Universal, of the testing.
The movie stars Tom Hanks and Julie Roberts, neither of which were on the set at the time of the accident.
