Close-Up Talk Radio spotlights Dr. Jocelyn Prang

Rapid City, SD –Last year, drug shortages in the United States reached an all-time high, with many doctors forced to postpone care or prescribe less reliable and more costly alternatives. Thanks to community compounding pharmacists like Dr. Jocelyn Prang, thousands of lives were saved.

Dr. Jocelyn Prang of Medicap Pharmacy is an independent franchise pharmacy owner specializing in pharmaceutical compounding, the art and science of preparing personalized medications to fit the unique needs of a patient. Dr. Prang uses the individual ingredients contained in a specific medication and mixes them together in the exact strength and dosage required by the patient as specified by their physician.

“I like the challenge of the chemistry,” says Dr. Prang. “I think it’s a fabulous way to get to know your patient and we focus on intense patient contact. If you come in with a problem, I’m the problem solver and we work with the patient and their doctor to improve their quality of life and enhance their lifestyle.”

According to Dr. Prang, the relationship between the patient, their doctor and the compounding pharmacist is essential. A doctor can deliver a diagnosis and prescribe a particular medicine, but if the patient has an issue, like a gluten allergy or the proper dosage isn’t commercially available, a compounding pharmacist can often provide the solution. Whether it’s a topical cream, capsules or eye drops, all medications are prepared in Dr. Prang’s state-of-the-art lab in compliance with all regulations.

“These drugs are even safer for patients because they’re more targeted to the specific patient’s needs. If you need Benadryl but you can’t have gluten, there isn’t a Benadryl on the market that doesn’t contain gluten. We make an over-the-counter Benadryl for you.”

Compounding pharmacists like Dr. Prang serve every field of medicine from pediatric to geriatric; even veterinarians rely on compounding pharmacists. Dr. Prang purchases her chemicals and equipment from Pharmaceutical Compounding Centers of America (PCCA), a national organization dedicated to supporting independent compounding pharmacists to ensure quality and safety.
