U.S. President Barack Obama Marks Eighth Anniversary of September 11 Terrorist Attacks

Speaking from the Pentagon on Friday morning U.S. President Barack Obama paid tribute to the nearly 3,000 victims who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C.

Obama joined Defense Secretary Robert Gates at the Pentagon to meet with families of the 184 people who died at the site and lay a wreath in remembrance. Obama made a short address that included the promise that America would never forget 9/11. As part of never forgetting Obama said, “In the defense of our nation we will never waver. In pursuit of al-Qaeda we will never falter.”

While Obama remained in Washington his vice president, Joe Biden, was in New York attending ceremonies near Ground Zero where two planes slammed into the World Trade Center Towers. As they have in past years marking the 9/11 anniversary volunteers read off the names of more than 2,700 victims who died in the attacks.

With Obama in Washington and Biden in New York former Secretary of State Colin Powell spent the morning in Shanksville, Pennsylvania where he attended a ceremony at the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93. That flight, many believe, was headed toward a D.C. target before the passengers stormed the cockpit and forced the plane down.
