Inmates at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison set fire to mattresses and clashed with guards during a violent riot that was believed to have sparked as a protest to conditions within the facility.
The riots began on Thursday while guards were searching for drugs and other banned items. At one point three inmates set fire to their mattresses and when guards tried to put the flames out the men attempted to escape. That led to further clashes within the prison and eventually U.S. helicopters along with Iraqi troops were called in to restore order.
Violence flared again on Friday but authorities were able to suppress the inmates and managed to regain control.
There have been some media reports suggesting fatalities but authorities have only said three guards and three inmates were injured.
