The 2009 NFL season got off to a strong start on Thursday night as the Pittsburgh Steelers managed to get past the visiting Tennessee Titans 13-10 after Jeff Reed connected on a 32-yard field goal in overtime. On Sunday the season will get underway in full as 26 teams take to the field, all looking to take the first step towards Miami and a berth in the Super Bowl.
There are plenty of storylines to follow on Sunday as Brett Favre takes his first snap as the Minnesota Vikings starting quarterback. Favre will try to get it done on the road as his Vikings travel to face the Cleveland Browns who will be starting Brady Quinn at QB.
In a showdown between a pair of playoff teams from a year ago the Atlanta Falcons will host the Miami Dolphins with many watching to see if Matt Ryan can repeat his amazing rookie campaign as signal caller for Atlanta.
Mark Sanchez will be hoping to mirror the season Matt Ryan had as the NY Jets rookie quarterback takes the snaps in his first NFL game. The Jets will be on the road when they face the Houston Texans, a team that has had its share of injury problems during the preseason.
In an NFC East showdown the Washington Redskins will travel to take on the New York Giants with the winner taking an early upper hand in one of the NFL’s toughest divisions. The Giants have undergone some serious changes at wide receiver and it will be interesting to see who Eli Manning goes to when he needs a big play.
Another early season matchup between divisional foes will get underway Sunday night as the Chicago Bears, led by new QB Jay Cutler, will head to Green Bay and face Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. While much has been made about the arrival of Cutler there are already many people predicting Rodgers will lead Green Bay back to the Super Bowl.
Perhaps the most anticipated game of Week 1 will come on Monday night as the New England Patriots host the Buffalo Bills. After missing virtually all of last year Tom Brady will be back under center for the Patriots and ready to lead the offense. If that story wasn’t big enough the Bills have their own addition as Terrell Owens plays his first regular season Game in a Buffalo uniform and he’ll be looking to make an impact at the receiver position.
