#3 USC Trojans travel to Columbus to take on the #8 Ohio State Buckeyes in the most highly-anticipated early college football game of the year. The game takes place Saturday at 8pm ET on ESPN.
Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor took the starting role last year as a true freshman after bringing a spark to the Buckeyes offense last season, but could not overcome the Trojans’ stifling defense. Southern Cal won 35-3 in Los Angeles.
This season, USC starts freshman Matt Barkley, the first true freshman QB in school history. Barkley debuted against San Jose State last week with a 15-for-19, 233-yard performance in USC's 56-3 rout.
The game will pit arguably the two most hyped high school quarterbacks in recent history against each other.
In high school, Pryor was ranked No. 1 in the nation as a senior in 2008, but Barkley was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year, becoming the first junior to do so. The following year, Barkley was also ranked No. 1 in the country. Both came into college expecting to sit at least a year and learn the game, but were both thrusted into the starting position with a lot of hype and anticipation.
Ohio St. lost many of their starters from last season, including their starting receivers and two All-Americans on defense (linebacker James Laurinaitis and cornerback Malcolm Jenkins).
However, USC returns much of their offensive firepower, especially in the backfield with C.J. Gable, Stafon Johnson and Joe McKnight. Damian Williams, who was first-team All-Pac 10 last year, will once again be the top wideout.
On defense, the Trojans lost All-American Rey Maualuga, but return another All-American in safety Taylor Mays, the hard-hitting anchor for the defense for the previous three years.
USC is already the favorite despite Barkley entering his first big-time game of his career in a hostile Horseshoe Stadium, but Ohio State’s performance last week didn’t help. OSU barely defeated Navy, 31-27, in their season opener.
