Gertrude Baines, Worlds Oldest Person, Dies at 115

The oldest person in the world, Gertrude Baines, died Friday at 115. Baines passed away in her sleep at Western Convalescent Hospital in Los Angeles, where had had lived since 107.

Baines’ longtime physician, Dr. Charles Witt, says she likely suffered a heart attack. An autopsy is being conducted.”I saw her two days ago, and she was just doing fine. She was in excellent shape. She was mentally alert. She smiled frequently,” Witt said Friday.

Baines was born on April 6, 1894. She survived all of her family members.

Kama Chinen, 114, of Japan has now become the world’s oldest person. The oldest person who ever lived was 122-year-old Jeanne Louise Calment, who died in France in 1997.
