Even though the last Packard left the factory in the 50’s, the plant where they were once produced is still standing, though blighted. And now the owner of the building may lose it to foreclosure for an unpaid tax bill totaling $750,000.
Dominic Cristini the owner of Bioresource can claim to the majority of the 3.5 million square foot complex. In the past, Cristini has faced legal challenges over ownership and even went so far as to live in the building in protest, but he may not put up a fight this time.
The Detroit Free Press reported that the Wayne County Treasurer’s Office plans to issue default notices to Biosresource early next week for an unpaid tax bill of $750,000.
The Packard Plant has been a thorn in the city’s side and they have previously asked the building be demolished. The old building is full of asbestos and fire fighters are not allowed to enter the building when a fire breaks out, which they frequently do.
“Do me a favor and knock the building down, “Cristini told online paper Motor City Muckraker, “I don’t want to be killed over the building.”
Cristini also said “The city can kiss my ass.” He doesn’t believe he should have to pay the taxes since they don’t provide services to protect the building.
So few people realize that an unpaid tax bill or unpaid utility bill owed to a municipality can throw their home into foreclosure, but it is relatively common. If you are in danger of losing your home for these reasons, a foreclosure attorney can be instrumental in keeping that from happening. Using their legal skills, a lawyer is capable of negotiating a payment plan or other alternatives like a short sale.
