Afghan President Hamid Karzai Inches Closer to Re-Election

Despite continued controversy surrounding allegations of voter fraud Afghan President Hamid Karzai appears all but assured of a second term as he now holds 54 percent of the vote with 95 percent of the ballots counted.

Those figures were released by the Election Commission and Karzai only needs a 50 percent majority to avoid a run-off. He currently holds a wide lead over his closest rival, Abdullah Abdullah, who stands at 28 percent.

Afghans went to the polls on August 20 and result shad been expected more than a week ago but widespread claims of voter fraud has slowed the process as those allegations are examined by the Electoral Complaints Commission.
