Israeli Jet Crash Kills Son of National Hero

An Israeli F-16 fighter jet crashed in the West Bank on Sunday, killing the 21-year-old pilot Assaf Ramon, the son of Israel’s only astronaut, Ilan Ramon, who died in the space shuttle Columbia explosion in 2003.

According to military officials Ramon was taking part in a routine flying exercise when the jet went down just south of Hebron. An investigation into what caused the jet to go down has been launched but there have been reports Ramon had been flying low prior to the crash.

News of Ramon’s death quickly spread through Israel as his father is considered a national hero. Ilan Ramon was one of the seven astronauts who died on Feb. 1, 2003 as the space shuttle attempted re-entry.
