College Football AP Top 25 Week 2 Rankings: Florida Gators, Texas Longhorns, USC Trojans Keep Top 3 Spots, Michigan Wolverines Enter at #25
After week one action in college football saw a pair of Top 10 teams fall the second week proved just as dangerous for the elite as two more schools, Oklahoma State and Ohio State, took major hits to their hopes of a national championship.
While there was a bit of a shake-up in Week 2 there remained some stability among the top teams as the Florida Gators, Texas Longhorns, USC Trojans and Alabama Crimson Tide held their spots at one, two, three and four. Each of those schools also earned at least one first-place vote in the AP Top 25 rankings.
Just one week ago the Oklahoma State Cowboys were being billed as a possible national championship contender but a loss to the unranked Houston Cougars has put serious doubt on those aspirations. The same can be said for the Ohio State Buckeyes who lost a heart-breaker at home to the USC Trojans, a loss that will cost them valuable votes when the BCS rankings come into play.
For the Florida Gators it was another easy week as they blasted the Troy Trojans but they could find the story different next week when they begin SEC action against the Tennessee Volunteers. The Texas Longhorns got off to a slow start against the Wyoming Cowboys but found their gear in the second half and rolled to an easy win. USC proved they still deserved mention as the country’s best with the road win over Ohio State while the Alabama Crimson Tide took care of business against Florida International.
A huge win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish vaulted the Michigan Wolverines into the AP Top 25 this week at #25 while Houston’s shocking road win over Oklahoma State shot them into the Top 25 at #21. AS for the BCS busters BYU inched further up the Top 25 and are now settled in at #7 following losses by Oklahoma State and Ohio State and the Boise State Broncos are now in the Top 10, resting at the #10 spot.
