Juan Martin Del Potro is just one win away from capturing his first career Grand Slam singles final after breezing past Rafel Nadal in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2009 U.S. Open on Sunday afternoon.
Del Potro dominated with his serve, collecting points on 79 percent of his first serves put in play and never allowing Nadal to break serve. For Nadal, the match was filled with inconsistency as the Spaniard committed an uncharacteristic 27 unforced errors and four double faults.
Del Potro has yet to win a Grand Slam singles title and his semifinals appearance at the U.S. Open had equaled his deepest run having reached the semis at the 2009 French Open before falling to Andy Murray. He reached the quarterfinals at this year’s Australian Open but has never been past the second round at Wimbledon.
