NFL Week 1 Scores: Mark Sanchez Shines in Debut as NY Jets Dump Houston Texans in Opener

Mark Sanchez was 18/31 passing for 272 yards passing and a touchdown, Thomas Jones rushed for 107 yards and a pair of TDs and the New York Jets defense limited the Houston Texans to just 168 yards of total offense in a 24-7 victory on Sunday.

It was a slow start for the Jets in the opening quarter as Jay Feely provided the only points of the frame with a 24-yard field goal but Sanchez began to settle down in the second and when he hit Chansi Stuckey on a 30-yard TD toss in the second New York was up 10-0.

That lead was extended to 17-0 in the third quarter when Jones pounded it across the goal line from a yard out. Houston finally got on the board in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t their offense that provided the points as John Busing intercepted Sanchez, fumbled the ball during the return, and teammate Dominique Barber picked it up and went 48 yards for the TD to make it 17-7.

New York answered the Texans touchdown with a 38-yard touchdown run from Jones that all but sealed the game.
