NFL Week 1 Scores: Drew Brees Lights Up Detroit Lions for 6 TDs as New Orleans Saints Cruise

Drew Brees was 26/34 for 358 yards and six touchdowns, Devery Henderson had 103 yards receiving and a TD and Mike Bell rushed for 143 yards on 28 carries as the New Orleans Saints ruined the debut of Detroit Lions rookie QB Matt Stafford in a 45-27 pounding on Sunday.

Brees got things started early for the Saints as he found Marques Colston on a 9-yard toss and less than three minutes later he connected with Robert Meachem for a 29-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead. Jason Hanson managed to get the Lions on the board with a 47-yard field goal and when Kevin Smith crossed the goal line from 4-yards out Detroit had cut their deficit to 14-0 but Brees stepped it up, hitting Jeremy Shockey on a one-yard touchdown and then the pair hooked up once again, this time on a 15-yarder, and the Saints carried a 28-10 lead into the half.

Stafford, who finished the day 16/37 passing for 205 yards and three picks, did find the endzone on the ground as his third quarter one-yard run pulled the Lions to within 28-17. After both teams traded field goals Brees tossed his fifth touchdown of the game when he hit Henderson on a 58-yard bomb to extend the lead to 38-20 but Detroit hung around and pulled to within 35-27 after Louis Delmas picked up a fumble and went 65 yards for the TD.

Brees iced the game midway through the fourth quarter though as he found Heath Evans on a 13-yard touchdown and the Saints defense shut the Lions down the rest of the way.
