NFL Week 1 Scores: Matt Ryan, Tony Gonzalez Gel as Atlanta Falcons Drop Miami Dolphins in Opener

Matt Ryan was 22/36 passing for 229 yards and two touchdowns, Tony Gonzalez finished with 73 yards receiving and a TD and the Atlanta Falcons defense forced four turnovers in a convincing 19-7 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

After a scoreless first quarter that included a missed field goal from Falcons kicker Jason Elam things picked up in the second as Ryan found fullback Ovie Mughelli on a one-yard toss for a 7-0 Atlanta lead. Elam then made up for his first quarter miss with a 36-yard field goal to push Atlanta’s lead to 10-0 and that advantage was carried into halftime.

Ryan then hooked up with Gonzalez in the third quarter on a 20-yard touchdown pass, the first in a Falcons uniform for the future Hall of Famer, but Elam’s extra point was wide and Atlanta held a 16-0 lead.

Atlanta’s defense continued to keep Miami’s offense off the scoreboard and Elam provided the Falcons with a 19-point cushion when he hit from 50-yards out midway through the fourth. Miami finally scored their first points of the 2009 NFL season when Chad Pennington hit Ricky Williams on a 9-yard touchdown pass but the Falcons managed to secure the ensuing onside kick and were able to run out the clock for the win.
