Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has officially announced her candidacy for president in 2008.
Declaring that she would begin a conversation with America, Clinton said “if we're going to be part of the solution. And all of us have to be part of the solution.”
With a focus on health care reform, an end to the war in Iraq, and deficit reduction, Clinton has launched a campaign that could produce the country’s first woman president. Clinton’s announcement comes just days before George Bush issues his State of the Union address on Tuesday.
Addressing the Bush presidency Clinton declared “After six years of George Bush, it's time to renew the pledge of America” on her website.
Clinton’s announcement has pushed her to the front of potential Democratic candidates in the race. On Tuesday Senator Barack Obama of Illinois announced his candidacy for presidency. Obama has enjoyed a surge in popularity over the past few months and could become the United States’ first black President.
