Kim Clijsters completed her amazing return to women’s tennis with a stunning straight set victory over Caroline Wozniacki 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday night to become the first unranked player to capture the U.S. Open title.
Clijsters used her powerful serve to keep Wozniacki at bay, winning 62 percent of her first serves put in play and collecting 36 winners. For Wozniacki, things began to fall apart midway through the first set and she was never able to recover. Clijsters was able to break the Dane’s serve on 5 of 8 opportunities while surrendering her own serve just three times in the match.
Clijsters, the former world’s number one, captured her only other Grand Slam singles title at the U.S. Open in 2005 after beating Mary Pierce. She has reached the finals at the French Open twice and the Australian Open once.
