Matt Lauer allegedly has until February to save his job at the TODAY show. According to reports, bosses plan to fire Lauer if ratings don’t improve in 3 months. Ratings have been in decline for several months.
“News executive Alexandra Wallace has told NBC bosses she will have to replace Matt if the ratings continue to tank. The TODAY show has always been considered a cash cow for the network. It dominated the morning news ratings for years and brought in millions of dollars in ad revenue,” an insider tells RadarOnline.com. “But, if viewers continue preferring Good Morning America over the TODAY show that revenue will decrease and cuts will have to be made.”
“Alexandra has told her bosses if the show isn’t pulling in more viewers by February, she has no alternative but to fire Matt. The replacement is likely to be Willie Geist,” the source adds.
Lauer’s popularity has waned since the ousting of Ann Curry in June. Ratings and Curry’s apparent lack of chemistry with Lauer was rumored to be the reason behind her dismissal.
“This is not as I ever expected, to leave this couch after 15 years. But I'm so grateful, especially to all of you who watch,” Curry said at the time.
“For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker I’m sorry I couldn’t carry the ball over the finish line, but man I did try!...And, for all of you who did watch, I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she added.
