NHL Scores from Jan. 20; Ray Emery, Miikka Kiprusoff, Manyy Legace, and Kari Lehtonen lead their teams to wins.

Brian Gionta scored in a shootout to give the New Jersey Devils (29-14-5) a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers (11-31-5). Gionta’s also scored the game-tying goal to send the game into overtime when he found the back of the net with :21 seconds remaining in the third period. Patrik Elias had a pair of assists for the Devils.

Niclas Havelid scored eight minutes into the third period and Marian Hossa added an empty netter as the Atlanta Thrashers (27-15-8) beat the New York Rangers (23-21-4) 3-1. Ilya Kovalchuk put the Thrashers in front in the first period but Jaromir Jagr tied the score three minutes later. Kari Lehtonen stopped 29 shots for the Thrashers.

The Florida Panthers (18-22-10) fell behind 1-0 in the first period but ran off four unanswered goals to beat the Washington Capitals (20-21-7) 4-1. Martin Gelinas scored two goals for the Panthers and Jozef Stumpel added a shorthanded goal in the second. Washington out-shot the Panthers 42-18 on the night.

Ray Emery stopped all 18 shots he faced to lead the Ottawa Senators (28-20-2) past the Boston Bruins (22-20-4) 3-0. Dany Heatley scored a pair of goals for the Senators and Chris Phillips scored in the opening period. Boston collected 46 penalty minutes in the contest compared to 17 for Ottawa.

Michael Ryder scored with less than three minutes remaining in the third period to lift the Montreal Canadiens (27-17-5) past the Buffalo Sabres (33-12-4) 4-3. Montreal jumped to a 3-0 lead but allowed the Sabres back in the game with three straight goals of their own. Daniel Briere scored twice for Buffalo.

The Toronto Maple Leafs (22-21-6) scored three minutes into the contest and then gave up seven straight goals to the Pittsburgh Penguins (21-17-8) in an 8-2 loss. Mark Recchi had a hat-trick and added an assist while Evgeni Malkin passed out five assists. Sidney Crosby finished with a goal and two assists in the win.

The Nashville Predators (34-12-3) scored three times in the third period to seal a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks (17-24-7) 6-3. The Predators had two goals in the first period :20 seconds apart but the Blackhawks answered with two of their own :09 seconds apart. David Legwand had a hat trick and added an assist for the Predators and Martin Erat had a goal and two assists.

Vaclav Prospal scored the deciding goal in the shootout as the Tampa Bay Lightning (26-22-2) beat the Carolina Hurricanes (25-19-6) 6-5. Martin St. Louis had a goal and two assists for Tampa while Prospal added a goal and a pair of assists as well. Eric Staal scored twice for the Hurricanes and Scott Walker had a pair of assists in the loss.

Andrew Brunette scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Joe Sakic added an empty netter to give the Colorado Avalanche (24-20-3) a 3-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings (30-14-5). Peter Budaj stopped 27 shots for the Avalanche. Valtteri Filppula scored the only goal for the Red Wings.

Stu Barnes scored in the ninth round of the shootout to lift the Dallas Stars (29-18-1) to a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild (25-20-4). Marty Turco stopped 25 shots for the Stars while Nicklas Backstrom had 22 saves for the Wild. Mikko Koivu forced extra time for the Wild with a goal inn the third period but Barnes found the back of the net in the shootout.

Miikka Kiprusoff stopped all 32 shots he faced to lift the Calgary Flames (26-17-4) past the Edmonton Oilers (23-21-4) 4-0. Matthew Lombardi and Dion Phaneuf each had a goal and an assist for the Flames and Roman Hamrlik added a pair of assists in the win. Edmonton collected 46 minute in penalties in the loss.

The Phoenix Coyotes (22-24-2) scored twice in the third period to beat the Los Angeles Kings (16-28-6) 3-2. Zbynek Michalek had two assists for the Coyotes as the Kings lost their seventh straight. Ladislav Nagy tied the score at 2-2 in the third and Travis Roche added the game winner with under two minutes remaining.

Manny Legace stopped all 31 shots he faced as the St. Louis Blues (19-21-8) shutout the San Jose Sharks (32-16-0) 1-0. Bill Guerin scored the only goal of the contest in the second period to give the Blues the win.
