It’s official: A royal baby is on the way! St. James Palace announced Monday Kate Middleton and Prince William are expecting their first child. The news follows months of pregnancy rumors.
"Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby," the palace said. "The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news."
Middleton, 30, is suffering from severe morning sickness and is being treated at London’s King Edward VII Hospital. "The Duchess was admitted this afternoon to King Edward VII Hospital in Central London with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter,” the palace added.
No other details, including when the baby is due, were released. Middleton and Prince William announced their engagement in November 2010 and wed in April 2011.
Last week, insiders told Us Weekly magazine the Duke and Duchess were renovating an apartment in Kensington Palace in preparation for a baby. With four floors and 20 rooms, the apartment will be big enough for a growing family. The $1.5 million renovation will reportedly be finished by next summer.
