Foreign troops attacked a vehicle carrying Islamist militants belonging to the al-Shabab group in the southern coastal town of Barawe in Somalia, killing at least two people and capturing two more.
There have been unconfirmed reports suggesting a top al-Qaeda suspect, Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, was among the two people killed in the attack.
Witnesses to the attack said the soldiers were dressed in French uniforms yet a military spokesman from France denied any involvement in the operation. French military officials have said the only troops they have in Somalia were concentrated on pirates and were not involved in land operations.
According to reports the soldiers arrived in foreign helicopters and fired on the vehicle before landing and taking away the two survivors, leaving two bodies in the road.
