An attempt to deliver free flour to residents of a poor neighborhood in Karachi, Pakistan on Monday turned deadly after a large crowd turned into a stampede, crushing at least 14 women and children and left several dozen more injured.
The distribution of the free flour was taking place in a small, congested area of Khori Garden and as the crowd surged to retrieve the food several people were trampled or suffocated. Karachi police chief Waseem Ahmed told reporters, “The incident happened because the distribution was taking place in a very confined area without any precautions.”
A private group had organized the free flour giveaway as part of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The man distributing the flour was detained by police because he failed to provide proper notice to authorities about the event.
