The NFL had plenty of stories to follow on Sunday as Brett Favre made his debut for the Minnesota Vikings, Mark Sanchez took his first snaps in a New York Jets Jersey, Drew Brees got off to a quick start in his pursuit for the single season touchdown record, and the Dallas Cowboys proved they still have a passing attack without Terrell Owens on the team.
Perhaps the most anticipated story of NFL Week 1 will unfold on Monday Night Football as Tom Brady returns to the quarterback position for the New England Patriots. Brady missed virtually all of last year due to injury but he’s now ready to return to the field and his first test will be the Buffalo Bills in an early season AFC East showdown.
Brady will have plenty of targets to throw to as Randy Moss is expected to put up big numbers as is Joey Galloway and Wes Welker. Sammy Morris is questionable at the running back position for Monday night but Fred Taylor could be an impact player in his first year in a Patriots jersey.
The real question will be the Patriots defense as they no longer have Richard Seymour, Tedy Bruschi and Ellis Hobbs to anchor the team but New England has expressed confidence in where they stand defensively and they’ll get tested when they face Buffalo.
As big a story as Brady returning to the Patriots is, of equal attraction is Terrell Owens wearing a Buffalo Bills uniform. Owens, among the most dynamic wide receivers in the game, left Dallas and headed for the North East and has promised big things for the 2009 season and Monday Night Football has always been one of his favorite stages to appear.
Owens will be partnered with Lee Evans, providing quarterback Trent Edwards two legitimate threats but the concern in Buffalo surrounds the offensive line and its ability to give Edwards enough time to deliver the ball. Buffalo doesn’t exactly have an established running game either as Fred Jackson enters his third year in the league.
With some serious questions about their offense still unanswered the Bills will have to rely on their defense to keep them in games and after a 2008 regular season that had then 14th in overall defense things could go bad quickly.
Kickoff for the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
