Juan Martin Del Potro managed to do what nobody else in tennis has ever done, beat Roger Federer in the finals of the U.S. Open, as the Argentinean stunned the world’s number one player in five sets 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 to win his first career Grand Slam singles final.
Del Potro shook off some nerves that were obvious in the first set, battling back in a tight second and then once again overcame a disappointing third set to just outhit Federer. The 20-year-old Del Potro played consistent tennis, putting 65 percent of his first serves in play and winning 73 percent of those offerings while Federer had a surprisingly tough time managing his first serve, putting just 50 percent in play.
Chasing a sixth straight U.S. Open title and his 16th career Grand Slam title Federer failed to take advantage of the chances he had to control the match, taking just five of the 22 break point opportunities presented to him. Federer also had an uncharacteristic 11 double faults but in the end it was the powerful forehand of Del Potro that sealed his fate.
Prior to Monday’s win Del Potro’s best finish at a Grand Slam was his semifinals appearance at the 2009 French Open where he fell to Andy Murray. He reached the quarterfinals at this year’s Australian Open but has never been past the second round at Wimbledon.
