A United Nations report has stated that there is enough supporting evidence to suggest that both Israeli and Palestinian troops were guilty of war crimes during the three-week conflict in the Gaza Strip.
According to the UN report, issued by the Human Rights Council, Israeli troops used “disproportionate force” during the operation and that there was evidence “indicating serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law were committed by Israel during the Gaza conflict.”
The report went on to accuse Israel of “committed actions amounting to war crimes, and possibly crimes against humanity.” It was the opinion of the UN that Israel be held accountable for its actions which could ultimately lead to the matter being turned over to the International Criminal Court.
While Israel appeared to carry the majority of blame for the conflict the UN also found that Palestinian groups were guilty of war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity for firing rockets and mortars into Israel.
Much of the report focused on Israel’s blockade of Gaza, an act that the UN said amounted to “collective punishment.” Israel has said their blockade is aimed at weakening Hamas leadership but the UN has said it is the people of Gaza that have paid the ultimate price as food and supplies are in short order.
Human rights groups have said as many as 1,400 Gazans were killed in the conflict that stretched for three weeks from December into January. Israel has reported three Israeli civilians and ten soldiers were killed in the conflict.
