Several mortar shells fired into Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone landed near the U.S. embassy on Tuesday while Vice-President Joe Biden was visiting the city.
It was unclear where Biden was when the mortars hit and there has been no word on any casualties or injuries. Biden made the previously unannounced visit in an attempt to reduce the tensions that exist inside the Kurdish, Shia and Sunni Arab communities.
Biden oversees the Iraqi operation for the Obama administration and has been working to ensure a strong political framework is in place by the time the U.S. withdraws all combat forces by the end of August 2010.
