Close-Up Talk Radio Spotlights Dr. Jay Powell

There are many educators in the world today that simply stick to traditional methods. Education is the key to success, as many would agree. However, what is more important; students achieving high test scores but not truly understanding what they’re being taught, or students actually understanding the content of the lessons?

With an extensive background in education, Dr. Jay Powell has researched and advocated alternative methods of education for the better part of 60 years. Through various analytical methods based upon his work with students and the environments of other classrooms, Dr. Powell has reached many conclusions to essential educational questions.

For his own part, Dr. Powell earned two Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Alberta, a Master’s of Education from the University of Toronto, and his doctoral degree from the University of Alberta. He did post-doctoral work at Harvard University, and also received a business credential from the University of Western Ontario’s Ivey School of Business Management.

Dr. Powell founded Better Schooling Systems, a 501c3 company, in order to consult with leaders of educational system to switch over from total correct scores to a different scoring system that considers the patterns of selecting every answer, not merely the “right” ones, which he developed through his research.

“What I’ve discovered is that the total correct scores on tests are invalid and should not be used to assess students’ performance,” exclaims Powell. “At my earliest experiences in teaching, I realized students relied on what I told them. They didn’t understand the readings or the lessons. They were just getting the answers primarily from what I said was important.”

Research methods Dr. Powell utilizes include reading comprehension, interviews, observation, and personality tests. Dr. Powell has been able to successfully locate key issues facing the education system.

“You can learn a lot through the pattern of answers that the students choose. Total-correct scores measure the student’s interpretations of the test questions and not what they know. Everything today is based upon of total correct scores. These scores determine who goes to college, what college they’re accepted into, who becomes doctors, lawyers, and so on… The basis for all of this needs a complete overhaul. By studying their mistakes and why these happened, our students can gain in depth of cognitive maturity and profound understanding.”

With his 2010 book release, Making Peasants into Kings, Dr. Powell explores and details his experiences through examples of lessons, student activities, and their results, which he witnessed both inside his classes and the classes of others that he observed.

“The idea behind the book is to make followers into leaders. The average student in my classroom gained two years of education in one. Below average students including in special education gained four years of education in one. It works. There’s now interest from educational institutions in Asia and Europe.”

“I’ve come to the conclusion that good teachers are the ones who challenge the kids in ways that they can accept, teachers who share interesting stories to build excitement and make learning fun, or teachers who use the content of the course as a vehicle for teaching thinking skills.”

Dr. Jay Powell will be featured on Close-Up Talk Radio with host Doug Llewelyn at www.blogtalkradio.com/closeuptalkradio on Friday December 14th and Friday December 21st. Both shows will air at 3pm EST on their respective dates. Listeners can dial-in at 347-996-3389.
