Afghan
President Hamid Karzai appears set to officially win re-election as the country’s
leader despite claims by European Union election observers that the process
involved wide scale fraud and voter irregularity.
Those
observers suggested that as many as 1.5 million votes could have been
fraudulent, a significant figure as Karzai currently sits at 54.6%. Karzai only
needs to secure a 50% majority to avoid a run-off, a figure that he will almost
certainly attain.
Karzai’s
main rival, Abdullah Abdullah, has been credited with 27.8% of the vote but he
has suggested that figure should be much higher. Abdullah has openly criticized
the process and blamed Karzai for voter fraud, an allegation that appears to be
supported by the EU observers.
Shortly
after the EU monitors announced as many as 1.5 million votes could have been
fraudulent Karzai’s campaign office issued a statement criticizing the claims
saying, “Today's announcement of the number of suspected votes, by the head and
deputy head of the EU Election Monitoring Commission, is partial, irresponsible
and in contradiction with Afghanistan's constitution.”
The
Electoral Complaints Commission has already said it would be recounting votes
that had been cast at 10% of the polling stations. That recount could easily
drop Karzai under the 50% margin and force a run-off, opening the door for
Abdullah to attract more voters.
