Execution Date Set for DC Sniper John Allen Muhammad

John Allen Muhammad, the man convicted of carrying out the sniper attacks in 2002 that claimed the lives of ten people in Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC, will be executed on November 10 following a Virginia judge’s order on Wednesday.

Known as the DC sniper or Beltway sniper, Muhammad partnered up with 17-year-old Lee Boyd Malvo and terrorized the DC area, often shooting people from a distance as they stood in parking lots or gas stations.

In 2003 Muhammad was found guilty in the murder of Dean Myers, 53, and by early 2004 he was sentenced to death. While on death row Muhammad was extradited to Maryland where he was convicted of six counts of first-degree murder and then returned to Virginia.

Wednesday’s ruling that set his execution date is expected to be appealed by Muhammad’s lawyer who has also said he would ask Virginia’s Governor Timothy Kaine for clemency.

Malvo is currently serving a life sentence for his role in the murders. Between Oct. 2, 2002 and Oct. 22, 2002 there were at least 13 shootings inside the Beltway that were attributed to Muhammad and Malvo. Of the 13 shot, ten died.
