A man’s shaved head can be a symbol of low-maintenance modern style. Whether a man is facing hair loss or simply wants a change, opting for a smooth head is a choice best made with a bit of preparation. Fortunately, it’s easy (and inexpensive) to do the job oneself. Skincare-News.com’s latest article, “A Man’s Guide to a Perfectly Shaved Head,” offers five easy steps to the perfect shave.

1. Cut it. The first step to a properly shaved head is to get out the scissors. Beginning with a razor will result in an uneven shave and can become a skincare nightmare. Using scissors, a man should cut as much hair as possible. Once this step is complete, all the newly cut hair can be washed off in the shower.
2. Trim it. The next step is to use an electric beard or hair trimmer, first ensuring that the trimmer is clean so that the blade will cut evenly. If the trimmer is dirty, use some rubbing alcohol to sterilize it. Next, set the blade to its lowest setting. Run the trimmer from the front of the head toward the back to make sure all the hairs are cut in the same direction. Finish by getting into the shower again to remove all the cut hairs.
3. Shave it. When it’s time to get out the actual blade, first prep the skin by opening up pores. To do this, run a washcloth under hot water for a few seconds and then apply to the head. Next, coat head evenly with shaving cream, using a product designed especially for sensitive skin. Make sure to wash the razor often, keeping it clean for an even shave. Finally, splash on some aftershave to soothe and cool the head.
4. Finish it. Finally, use a hand mirror to examine the entire head, making sure no spots were missed. Also, check the condition of the skin: If there are any red spots, bumps or areas of discomfort, keep an eye on them over the next few days to ensure that they heal properly. If not, try a healing cream or consult with a dermatologist.
5. Protect it. Shaving and exposure to the sun can lead to a dry, flaky scalp—and with a bald head, flaws are impossible to hide. Use a good moisturizer on the head every morning, ideally one that includes SPF. The scalp is even more susceptible to sun damage than other areas of the body, so bald heads should always be protected with an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen. And in the event of prolonged sun exposure, wear a hat.
