Notre Dame’s Plans After Big East Fallout

Notre Dame is in a delicate spot with the Big East’s seven Catholic basketball schools looming exit. There is a big question of being unsure of which conference it will play in next season. This does not just include basketball, but their other sports as well will be affected.

In September, Notre Dame announced its departure from the Big East conference. Despite a contractual obligation to play in the league for another 2 years, the school is concerned with not having a league to play in during the next season. Athletic director, Jack Swarbrick, voiced his concern saying, "It is an untenable situation and we have to actively consider how we can get to resolution. You have two halves of a conference splitting and that creates real uncertainty for Notre Dame given the things that have to be negotiated among those parties."

In seven months Notre Dame fall sports begins and if they wait too long they could be left out. According to Swarbrick, the ACC is open to taking in Notre Dame in basketball and other sports next season without the football-scheduling obligations.

The scariest thing for Swarbrick is that he has been let out of discussions so Notre Dame does not even really know their options in an already confusing predicament.

Despite these setbacks, Swarbrick promised not to wait around for things to happen.
