In a straight set match that took just over two hours to complete Fernando Nadal dismantled number two seeded Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the Australian Open semifinals.
Gonzalez will now face Germany’s Tommy Haas in an attempt to reach the Australian Open finals, taking on the winner of the Roger Federer Andy Roddick match-up in the other semis.
Gonzalez used his powerful serve and a consistent forehand to make short work of the overmatched Nadal. Breaking Nadal twice in the first set, Gonzalez set the tone early and used a dominate serve that led to 10 aces in the match.
Nadal appeared hampered by a leg injury throughout the match and had to leave the court in the third set for medical attention
The victory marked the first time Gonzalez has ever reached a Grand Slam semifinal.
