For the first time in over a decade, Miss USA has won the Miss Universe pageant. Olivia Culpo, who swapped her Miss Rhode Island crown for the Miss USA crown over the summer, beat 88 other women from around the globe for the title. She is the first American to do so in 15 years – the last Miss USA to win the Miss Universe pageant was Hawaii’s Brook Lee in 1997.
Culpo, a sophomore at Boston University, takes over the title from Miss Angola, Leila Lopes. Miss Philippines, Janine Tugonon, was declared the first runner-up and and Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero, took second runner-up.
"What an honor! This night was a dream come true. Thank you everyone for your support tonight!! USA finally did it!" Culpo Tweeted soon after her win.
The 20-year-old was excited to begin her first Miss Universe duties on Thursday morning. "Rise and shine!! Makeup time with @Yukyan51 for a long day of media. Ready for day one of #MissUniverse life :)" she Tweeted.
