Grey’s Anatomy Star Isaiah Washington Begins Counseling

Stemming from his highly publicized homophobic remarks at this year’s Golden Globe Awards, "Grey’s Anatomy" star Isaiah Washington has sought counseling to come to understand why he has been using hateful speech.

Washington released a statement saying “With the support of my family and friends, I have begun counseling. I regard this as a necessary step toward understanding why I did what I did and making sure it never happens again. I appreciate the fact that I have been given this opportunity and I remain committed to transforming my negative actions into positive results, personally and professionally.”

Publicity began to swirl around Washington’s language after an argument with co-star Patrick Dempsey on the set of "Grey’s Anatomy." Washington was accused of labeling another cast member, T.R. Knight, a “faggot.”

Washington immediately denied that he had used the word and when he had the opportunity at the Golden Globes he once again stated that he never referred to Knight as a “faggot.” While he maintained his innocence, Knight appeared on the "Ellen DeGeneres Show" and confirmed that, in fact, Washington had made the comments.

In his statement Washington went on to say “I can also no longer deny to myself that there are issues I obviously need to examine within my own soul, and I’ve asked for help. ... I know a mere apology will not end this, and I intend to let my future actions prove my sincerity.”

Shonda Rhimes, the creator of "Grey’s Anatomy," issued a statement concerning Washington’s decision to seek treatment “We applaud and encourage Isaiah's realization that he needs help and his subsequent choice to seek immediate treatment for his behavioral issues.”
