A suicide bomber targeted a busy market near the town of Kohat in northwest Pakistan on Friday, detonating a large explosive packed in a vehicle, killing at least 33 people and leaving several more injured. The militant group Lahskar-e-Jhangvi al-Ami has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Friday’s blast leveled buildings in the area and left several victims buried in the debris. Many people have resorted to using their hands to search for bodies as rescue efforts have been hampered by the lack of machinery and cranes to lift the debris.
Reports have suggested that the majority of those killed were Shia Muslim and that the attack was carried out by the Sunni extremist group as an act of revenge for the murder of a religious leader who was killed in June. It is believed the group has ties to the Taliban which has established a presence in the area.
That presence has been challenged by the Pakistani army which has carried out numerous attacks on the group as has the U.S. military. Just last month Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud was killed by a U.S. drone strike.
