Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin Calls U.S. Decision to Halt Missile Defense Bases “Correct and Brave”

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has called the U.S. President Barack Obama’s decision to halt the planned missile bases in Poland and Czech Republic “correct and brave” while President Dmitry Medvedev noted the announcement opened the door for talks between the two countries concerning missile proliferation.

The decision to shelve the missile defense program, designed to protect U.S. interests and allies from long-range missile attacks, was made after determining Iran’s ability to launch such an attack was not viable at this time.

Obama’s announcement stated Iran had shifted their development to short-range and middle-range missiles and as such the U.S. needed to establish an interceptor system that focused on the new threat.

Originally undertaken by the administration of former President George Bush, the missile defense system was adamantly opposed by Russia which claimed the system posed a threat to its national security. The U.S. had already signed deals with Poland and Czech Republic to build the system, now those plans have been scrapped.

While that decision has been hailed by Russia the same can’t be said for Republicans who have openly criticized Obama’s decision, saying it is “short-sighted” and could be harmful to the country’s long-term security.
