The African Union has called for more weapons to be sent to the UN-backed Somali government in an effort to better fight the heavily armed Islamist militants who have been attempting to take control of the country.
Chief among those Islamist militants is al-Shabab which launched a series of suicide attacks in the capital city of Mogadishu on Thursday which left 17 AU peacekeepers dead. Those peacekeepers have been severely undermanned, currently operating with 5,000 soldiers and they regularly encounter militants with superior firepower.
Only Uganda and Burundi have contributed soldiers to the AU forces in Somalia while the United States has been supplying arms to the interim government. According to the AU if the government of Somalia is to succeed it will need a greater contribution from the international community.
