Reggie Bush is at the center of a recent scandal involving tapes that may provide evidence that the former USC Trojans running back and 2005 Heisman Trophy Award winner received gifts and money while playing.
Bush, who now plays for the New Orleans Saints, was to be the cornerstone of Lloyd Lake and Michael Michaels’ sports marketing agency, New Era Sports & Entertainment. During the years 2004-05 Bush and his family were reportedly given cash and gifts by Lake as a means of representing the running back when he signed a professional contract.
Lake recorded several conversations he had with Bush to ensure the star wouldn’t back out of the deal. When Bush signed with agent Joel Segal, Lake reportedly looked to recoup his losses.
Bush, along with his mother, Denise Griffin, and stepfather, LaMar Griffin, have claimed that Lake has tried to use his recorded conversations with Bush to extort a large sum of money.
The NCAA is currently investigating whether Bush violated eligibility requirements by receiving gifts and money while playing for USC. If they find that Bush did break the rules USC could face sanctions. As well, the Heisman Trophy Trust could strip Bush of his Award.
