Heading into the second week of the NFL season there is already talk that some teams will be playing for their playoff lives when they take the field on Sunday. While there will be a sense of urgency among a handful of teams there will also be a handful of teams looking to cement supremacy in their conference.
Much has already been made about the New England Patriots traveling to take on their AFC East rivals, the New York Jets. Billed as Tom Brady verse Mark Sanchez, the game could be an early indicator of who will take the division. The Patriots survived last week against the Buffalo Bills while the Jets looked solid against the Houston Texans.
While the Pats and Jets grab the storylines in the AFC the NFC has their own prime time event as the Dallas Cowboys open their new stadium with a showdown against the New York Giants. Tony Romo looked comfortable in the Cowboys win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week while Eli Manning and the Giants did enough to stop the Washington Redskins.
Despite flying under the radar, the Minnesota Vikings traveling to face the Detroit Lions could produce some great highlights. Brett Favre did what he had to last week, mainly handing off to Adrian Peterson, as the Vikings clubbed the Cleveland Browns. It wasn’t the same story of Matt Stafford as the NFL’s number one pick in the 2009 NFL Draft had a rough start in a loss to the New Orleans Saints. This will be Stafford’s first game at home and he’ll need a better performance this week if he’s to convince the fans Detroit made the right pick.
There could be some teams playing with desperation on Sunday, trying to avoid a deadly 0-2 start and several of those games look tough. The Carolina Panthers are already facing pressure to get their first win but they have to travel to face Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons in a key AFC South matchup. After bringing in Jay Cutler at the QB position the Chicago Bears were a fashionable pick to reach the Super Bowl but if they don’t find a way to beat the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday their season may already be in the tank. The same could be said for the Miami Dolphins who stunned the AFC last year with an 11-5 record but a week one loss to the Falcons showed a lot of holes in their offense. Miami gets to play at home on Monday night but they’ll need to knock off Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts to avoid an 0-2 start.
Perhaps the most interesting game of the week will be the New Orleans Saints taking on the Philadelphia Eagles as Drew Brees is coming off a huge game against the Lions. Philly will be without Donovan McNabb and will have to rely on their defense to keep them in the game as Kevin Kolb makes his first NFL start for the Eagles.
