College Football Scores: #1 Florida Gators Holds Off Tennessee Volunteers as Defense Shines

Tim Tebow completed 14 of 19 passes for 115 yards while collecting 76 yards and a touchdown on the ground, Caleb Sturgis booted three field goals and the Florida Gators (3-0) defense held the Tennessee Volunteers (1-2) offense to just 210 yards in a surprisingly close 23-13 victory on Saturday.

The Gators opened the game with an impressive first drive but had to settle for a 37-yard field goal from Sturgis for an early 3-0 lead. Tennessee managed to tie that game on a Daniel Lincoln 24-yard field goal and that 3-3 score carried over into the second quarter.

Tebow then gave the Gators a 10-3 advantage when he scored form a yard out on a quarterback keeper. Tennessee didn’t fold the tent though and they managed to get back to within 10-6 on a 20-yard field goal from Lincoln but Sturgis got those points back when he was good from 29-yards out with less than a minute before the half.

Florida had to settle for another Sturgis field goal early in the third but Jeffery Demps finally added a second touchdown to the Gators score when he crossed the goal line from 7-yards out and the score was 23-6.

With the Gators defense stifling the Volunteers offense that score looked insurmountable but Tennessee managed to find the endzone midway through the fourth quarter when Montario Hardesty scored on a 17-yard run but Florida wouldn’t allow the Volunteers any more points as they collected their first win in the SEC this year.
