Floyd Mayweather Jr. showed no rust from his nearly two year layoff from the boxing ring as he improved to 40-0 on Saturday after dominating Juan Manuel Marquez 50-5-1 in a welterweight clash before a packed house at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Mayweather earned an easy decision in the 12-round bout, sweeping the judges’ cards with a unanimous decision.
Mayweather, whose last ring appearance was a knockout of Ricky Hatton in December 2007, displayed the speed and efficiency that made him pound-for-pound the best boxer in the world. That speed was on display against Marquez as the Mexican had no answer for Mayweather’s ability to move in, damage his body with a series of jabs, and then move back out.
While Mayweather pounded the body of Marquez it was a left hook that sent him to the canvas in the second round. It never got any better for Marquez as it appeared as if Mayweather just kept his opponent around for entertainment purposes, punishing him at will through the remaining rounds.
In the eight Mayweather looked as if he could put the tired Marquez away but opted to keep working his jab in what mirrored a sparring session rather than a super-fight.
