The 2009 college football season has already proven dangerous for teams ranked in the top ten and Saturday was no different as the USC Trojans saw their national championship hopes take a serious hit when they lost to the Washington Huskies and fell from #3 to #12. BYU’s dreams of an undefeated season and a BCS berth ere all but shattered when they got blasted by the Florida State Seminoles, dropping them from #7 down to #19 this week.
While the early season has been a bit unpredictable for the top ten the Florida Gators and Texas Longhorns have continued to hold firm to their spot atop the rankings. With the Gators taking care of the Tennessee Volunteers and the Longhorns holding off the Texas Tech Red Raiders the two teams haven’t budged from their spots at #1 and #2.
The SEC can make a strong case for being the toughest in college football as they now have four of the top seven teams in the AP rankings. While Florida is ranked #1 the Alabama Crimson Tide moved up a spot to #4, the Mississippi Bulldogs bumped up to #4 and the LSU Tigers moved up two spots to #7 this week.
The biggest jump of the week came from the Miami Hurricanes who used a dominant performance against Georgia Tech last week to move from #20 to #9. While The Hurricanes made the biggest jump perhaps the most shocking jump was made by the Washington Huskies who are now ranked #24 after stunning USC. The Huskies didn’t win a game last year and now lead the Pac-10.
Of course the Huskies will be challenged by the California Golden Bears who are the only Pac-10 ten in the top 10 this week. California went on the road this week and topped Minnesota to move up two spots up to #6 this week.
